Vance Blames GOP Loss on Iran War—Trump Says “Largely True”

Vice President JD Vance said Republicans lost because of the Iran war, arguing that many 2024 Trump/Vance voters backed Democrats in 2026. In a post-election thread on X dated Nov. 4, 2026, Vance wrote, “The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.”

Vance: Turnout wasn’t the problem—vote choice was

Vance said his team saw strong Republican turnout in some states but warned that “our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us,” citing what he called “the smartest data guy I know.” He pointed to Florida, saying “the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat,” and argued that “the main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026.”

Vance added that a pollster he respects surveyed Trump 2024 voters who were “angry and planning to vote for Democrats,” and the top four issues that could win them back were: “1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel.” He concluded, “The real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.”

Trump’s response: “Largely true,” but he’d make the same call

According to Fox News, President Donald Trump said Vance’s position that Republicans lost due to the war was “largely true.” Fox News quoted Trump saying the war “drove the gasoline up a little bit short term,” and that “if I had it to do again, I’d have to do it again… You can’t let Iran have a nuclear war.” He also said there was “no choice,” per Fox News.

Reactions and ripostes

Vance referenced criticism within the GOP over calls for diplomacy, saying some on the right attacked Rachel Campos-Duffy for urging a diplomatic resolution but that “her political advice was sound.”

On X, Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume posted, “Apart from occasions like the day after Pearl Harbor, is going to war ever politically popular? … the lesson of the Iran conflict is that if you go to war, you must win and quickly.”

A post from the account of former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized Vance’s framing and cited unmet 2024 promises, saying, “Blaming the Iran war won’t work.”

Commentator Dave Rubin posted that a president willing to accept short-term political fallout for what he believes is right is “very refreshing.”
